Horn of Africa
A backlit Cape buffalo stands facing the camera at dawn. Its body is in silhouette, and the sun is rising above the horizon behind. Shot with a Nikon D850 and an 800mm lens at Kicheche Bush Camp in Kenya in January 2021.
ISO 90, 800mm, f/5.6, 1/1000, -1 EV
This image came second in Apero magazine’s monthly art competition in February 2021:
“Dramatic against the backdrop of a glowing sun, the soft silhouette of a buffalo emerges in ‘Horn of Africa’. Artist Nick Dale consistently instills a sense of grandeur and drama into his work and focuses on capturing a narrative as well as feeling. This singular image breathes both space and balance and invites the viewer into the story. Dale’s stunning emphasis on colour, light and form should be applauded.”
E.E. Jacks
It was also shortlisted in The Greatest Maasai Mara Photographer of the Year:
"I love the horn being the only indicator of the species we are looking at, and the soft atmosphere so typical of some Mara sunrises."
